After a run of grey mornings, we finally caught a bluebird day. Clear sky, air temp 13°C, and a soft west wind at just 13 km/h (7 knots). Visibility ran a clean 10 km with the sun cracking the horizon at 6:49 AM. Bright, calm, and comfortable — the kind of morning that makes an early departure worth it.

The marine forecast promised building northwest wind, 20 to 30 knots, later in the day, along with fog patches after midnight. But our window was quiet. Seas held at a metre or less, just a light chop laid over green-grey water. The tides moved in our favour, with a low of 3.7 feet at 11:30 AM and slack before flood at Seymour Narrows around 11:21 AM. Seymour was ripping a 13-knot ebb, so we stayed off the narrows and let the moving water in Discovery Passage push the bait.

The Catch

Captain Jason ran the 27' Boston Whaler Conquest out of Coast Marina and set up on the main channel between Vancouver Island and Quadra Island. The technique was classic Tyee-season work: hoochies — plastic squid lures — trailing behind flashers, run deep at 220 feet on the downriggers, trolling around 2.5 knots. Water temp read a warm 16.5°C, which had the fish active and feeding.

And feed they did. Fourteen Chinook came to the boat through the morning. The new moon and an excellent solunar forecast lined up with the bite, with the major feeding window running from 9:43 to 11:43 AM. The best fish of the day pushed 22 pounds — a fine Tyee-season salmon. Our guests were William and Pat, two brothers up from Washington on their first trip with us. A brothers' trip well spent.

What's Running in September

September is Tyee season in Campbell River, and it is the reason many anglers plan their year around it. In DFO Area 13, the daily limit is two Chinook per person with a 62cm minimum and no maximum — meaning a real bruiser can come home. Most fish this time of year run 12 to 16 pounds, solid chrome feeders, with a genuine chance at a trophy in the 30-pound-plus range. Coho are also in the mix through the fall. Warm water and abundant bait keep the fish active and feeding through the Passage.
