FSC Daily Fishing Report - Thursday, June 4, 2026
Two chrome bright salmon came to the boat on Discovery Passage today as Captain Trevor worked the tidal current seams in the main channel. Campbell River fishing charter trips are running three departures daily through the summer season.
Summer Salmon on Discovery Passage — June 4, 2026
The sky was grey and low and the water was calm. Discovery Passage stretched out flat between Vancouver Island and Quadra Island, barely a ripple on the surface. Air temperature sat at 13 degrees under full overcast. Wind was negligible — 4 kilometres per hour out of the west-northwest, the kind of breeze you feel on your cheek and then forget about. Visibility was wide open at 10 kilometres. No fog, no drama, just a quiet June morning on the passage.
Conditions on the Water
The marine forecast called for northwest 15 knots building tonight, but during the fishing window the water cooperated. Seas held at a metre or less. The tide told the real story — a 11.4-foot high at 5:50 AM draining all the way down to 2.7 feet by 2:11 PM. That is a massive exchange of water, and it pulled bait through the channel like a conveyor belt. Seymour Narrows slack before ebb came at 8:03 AM and the next slack before flood arrived at 2:24 PM. Current was running 2.7 knots on the flood. Water temperature registered 15.0 degrees Celsius, warm enough to keep fish active and holding in the upper water column.
The Catch
Captain Trevor worked the Boston Whaler Montauk through the main channel, trolling the current seams where the tidal flow concentrates baitfish along the edges. Two chrome bright salmon came to the boat. Both fish were in excellent condition — silver sides, clean fins, no spawning colour showing. Fresh ocean fish. The larger of the two had real shoulders and weight, consistent with the 12-to-16-pound fish we have been seeing this season. The major solunar feeding period ran from 2:07 PM to 4:07 PM with the moon underfoot, lining up nicely with the slack before flood at 2:24 PM. When the tide timing and the solunar window overlap like that, good things tend to happen. The moon was waning gibbous at 84 percent illumination, with the day rated fair overall on the solunar scale.
What Is Running in June
June on Discovery Passage means summer Chinook are moving through the system. Most fish are in the 12-to-16-pound range — solid, chrome bright feeders that pull hard and fight well. There is always a chance at a trophy fish pushing 30 pounds or more, but the bread and butter of early summer is those clean, bright feeders stacking up in the passage. Coho salmon are beginning to show as well, adding variety to the catch. DFO Area 13 regulations require a minimum of 62 centimetres to retain Chinook. The slot limit of 62 to 80 centimetres takes effect July 15, so for now anglers can enjoy the full range of fish available. Water temperatures will continue climbing through June, keeping fish shallower and more accessible.
