Conditions Report: July 23, 2026

A proper summer afternoon on the water. Air temperature sat at 24°C under broken clouds, with a light ENE wind of just 2 to 3 knots gusting to 5. Visibility ran a clean 10km and the water sat calm and blue-green through the main channel. Sunset was set for 9:16 PM, giving us long, even light for the evening bite.

The marine forecast called northwest 20 to 30 knots for the coming night, but the afternoon held fair with seas at a metre or less. We planned around the building weather and got our window early. Tide was the driver. An afternoon high of 12.0 feet landed at 5:00 PM, and the flood pushed bait through Discovery Passage right as we set lines. Slack before ebb at Seymour Narrows read 3:28 PM, with current running a soft 0.7 knots.

The Catch

Captain Trevor ran the trip aboard the 17-foot Boston Whaler Montauk, working the main channel between Vancouver Island and Quadra Island. We trolled hoochies behind flashers at roughly 2.5 knots, running downriggers in the 80 to 120 foot range. Water temperature was a warm 18.3°C, which kept the Chinook holding shallow and active.

The rod loaded, the drag gave, and a chrome bright Chinook in the 14 to 16 lb class came to the boat. This was a first-time angler, and there is nothing quite like watching someone hold their first salmon. A First Quarter moon at 67% and a Good solunar rating had the evening feeding window opening right on cue at 6:22 PM.

What's Running in July

Summer is prime Chinook season in Campbell River. Most feeders run in the 12 to 16 lb range this time of year, with a genuine chance at a trophy 30-pounder. Under DFO Area 13 rules for July 15 to August 31, anglers may retain one Chinook per day within a 62 to 80cm slot. Anything over 80cm must be released, which keeps the run strong for years to come. Warm water this time of year means active fish holding shallow, ideal conditions for a productive troll.
