FSC Daily Fishing Report - Thursday, August 13, 2026
Four generations shared one boat on a glass calm summer morning. This Campbell River fishing charter put a family on chrome bright Chinook, best fish 15 lbs, trolling plugs deep on Discovery Passage.
Conditions Report: Thursday, August 13, 2026
Some mornings the water gives you everything. We rolled out of Coast Marina at first light with the sun just cresting at 6:07 AM, and Discovery Passage lay flat and blue-green in front of us. The air sat at 26°C with a light east wind at just 5 knots, barely enough to ripple the surface. Clear sky overhead. Visibility a clean 10km to the horizon.
The marine forecast called for northwest 5 to 15 knots and seas 1 metre or less, and out on the passage it stayed glass calm through the morning. The tide worked in our favour too — the high at 5:00 AM eased toward the midday low, pushing bait through the main channel. Seymour Narrows ran slack before flood at 12:19 PM, and we timed our passes around the moving water.
The Catch
We kept it simple. Plugs on the downriggers, dropped to 125 feet, trolling the main channel between Vancouver Island and Quadra Island at around 2.5 knots. The water was warm at 18.3°C and the fish were holding deep and active. Today was a New Moon with an Excellent solunar rating, and the major feeding window from 11:14 AM to 1:14 PM lined up right with the tide change. The rods kept firing.
Brett came back to us — this time with his brother, his dad and his nephew, four generations on one boat. They filled the box with chrome bright Chinook, mostly solid feeders in the 12-16 lb range, with the best fish going 15 lbs. Every fish over the slot limit went back clean to keep the run strong. Grins all around.
What's Running in August
Mid-August is prime time on Discovery Passage. The Chinook are in good numbers, typically running 12-16 lbs with a genuine shot at a trophy 30-plus pounder. Under DFO Area 13 rules through August 31, it's one Chinook per day in the 62-80cm slot, with anything over 80cm released. Coho are showing too as summer rolls toward fall. The warm water keeps fish active and feeding, and the tides through the narrows do the rest.
