Conditions Report: Sunday, July 5, 2026

Summer showed up in full this morning. Air temp climbed to 21°C under scattered clouds and a hard blue sky, with a light east wind at just 5 knots. Visibility ran clean past 10 km — you could pick the mountains out sharp across the strait. Sunrise was early at 5:18 AM, and the day stretched long toward a 9:32 PM set.

The water matched the sky. Seas held at a metre or less with only a light chop working the surface. Tides gave us a low at 4:45 AM at 9.2 feet, a high at 8:14 AM at 10.1 feet, then the ebb building toward the 2:38 PM low. Seymour Narrows ran about 1.9 knots on the flood, with slack before ebb at 9:40 AM. We timed the morning around that window.

The Catch

Captain Bruce ran the 6 AM introductory trip aboard the 17' Boston Whaler Montauk with Maxime and Eliott, two first-timers up from Montreal. We worked the green can in Discovery Passage, trolling hoochies — plastic squid lures — behind flashers, running UV cuttlefish down 80 to 120 feet at around 2.5 knots.

Water temp was warm at 17.9°C, so the fish were active and up in the column. We picked away all morning: bright feeder Chinook mostly in the 12-16 lb range, with Coho mixed through. The last quarter moon had the solunar rating sitting good, and the morning slack carried the bite. One chrome hatchery fish in the box, seventeen released. First salmon for both of them. The rod bent, the drag ran, and the fish came up silver.

What's Running in July

July is prime feeder Chinook season on Discovery Passage, with Coho building through the summer. Expect Chinook in the 12-16 lb range most days, with a genuine chance at a trophy 30-plus pounder for the patient angler. Under DFO Area 13 rules, Chinook run a 62-80cm slot from July 15, so many bigger fish go back — we frame every release as keeping the run strong for the years ahead. Warm summer water keeps the fish shallow and active, which makes it a fine time for first-timers to learn the ropes.
