FSC Daily Fishing Report - Saturday, July 11, 2026
A family trip from Ottawa met a hot summer bite on this Campbell River fishing charter. First-timer Paul landed a chrome bright 16 lb Chinook salmon on Discovery Passage, with a Coho and twenty-one fish touching the boat.
Conditions Report: July 11, 2026
Summer showed its friendly face on Discovery Passage this morning. Air temp sat at 18°C under broken clouds, with a light easterly wind of 7 knots gusting to 14. The marine forecast called morning fog patches, and they dissipated early, leaving us a clean 10 km of visibility on green, lightly rippled water. Seas held at one metre or less, so the 27' Boston Whaler Conquest ran comfortable all day.
We fished the tide. The low came at 9:33 AM at 1.8 feet, building toward the afternoon high of 12.3 feet at 4:47 PM. The window that mattered was the slack before flood at Seymour Narrows at 9:10 AM. Seymour Narrows was ripping 18.5 knots on the flood at peak, so we worked the softer water of the main channel where the tide change pushes bait through.
The Catch
Classic Campbell River technique carried the day. We trolled hoochies and Tomic plugs on the downriggers, running 80 to 130 feet at around 2.8 knots. The water was warm at 17.2°C, which kept the fish shallower than usual and feeding well. When the slack turned around 9:10 AM, the rods came alive.
The solunar forecast rated Good on a waning crescent moon, and the major feeding period from 8:18 to 10:18 AM stacked right on top of the tide change. That combination is gold. Paul, on his very first day fishing BC water, was into a chrome bright 16 lb Chinook that came up silver and fought all the way to the net. A Coho joined the box, and the boat touched twenty-one fish through the morning. Most ran the honest 12 to 16 lb range typical for July.
What's Running in July
July is prime Chinook time in Discovery Passage, with feeder fish and migrating salmon moving through the channel. Coho begin to show in numbers through the summer as well. Under DFO Area 13 rules, Chinook must be a minimum 62 cm to retain, and from July 15 through August 31 a 62 to 80 cm slot limit applies, meaning any fish over 80 cm must be released to protect the run. Expect solid 12 to 16 lb feeders as the norm, with a real shot at a trophy 30-plus pounder for the patient angler.
