FSC Daily Fishing Report - Monday, August 17, 2026
On a clear August afternoon, a first-time couple from Burnaby landed a chrome-bright 14 lb Chinook off Quathiaski Cove. Read the daily report from this Campbell River fishing charter with Captain Bruce.
Conditions Report: August 17, 2026
Summer showed up in its best clothes for the afternoon run. Sixteen degrees, feeling like fifteen, with a light northwest wind at 7 knots and scattered clouds drifting over clear blue sky. Visibility ran a clean 10 kilometres — far enough to pick out the coast mountains across the strait. Sunrise had come at 6:13 AM and sunset would follow at 8:36 PM, leaving us long, warm light for an evening session.
The marine forecast for Johnstone Strait and Discovery Passage called northwest 10 to 20 knots with seas of one metre or less. In the sheltered water off Quathiaski Cove near the Quadra Island ferry terminal it read as light chop, no whitecaps. The tide was building from the 2:05 PM low toward the evening high, and at Seymour Narrows the slack before flood landed at 3:20 PM. We fished the shoulder of that change, when the current softens and the bait gets pushed and the fish come looking.
The Catch
Captain Bruce ran the 4:00 PM introductory trip aboard the 17' Boston Whaler Montauk with Nipun and Nipun, a couple down from Burnaby on their very first salmon trip. We trolled Tomic plugs — the trusty 603 — at about 2.5 knots, running the downriggers between 80 and 120 feet. Surface water sat at a warm 18.1°C, and the fish were active. The rod loaded as the flood began, right in line with the major solunar feeding window in the early afternoon. They brought it up together: a chrome-bright Chinook, 14 pounds, fins intact and cold from the deep. A second fish followed. First trip, first Chinook, and two grins you couldn't have wiped off with a rag.
What's Running in August
August is prime Chinook time in Campbell River. Most fish come in the 12 to 16 pound range — solid, chrome feeders — with an outside shot at a trophy 30-pounder that keeps everyone honest. Under DFO Area 13 rules through August 31, it's one Chinook per day within a 62 to 80 cm slot, with anything over 80 cm released to keep the run strong. Come September 1, the Tyee season opens the door to keeping bigger fish. Coho are around too as summer rolls toward fall. Warm surface water keeps the salmon feeding shallow this time of year.
