FSC Daily Fishing Report - Monday, August 10, 2026
A Florida visitor got the full Campbell River fishing charter experience - his first whales at dawn and his first Chinook salmon, a chrome 15-pounder, all in one summer morning on Discovery Passage.
Conditions Report: Monday, August 10, 2026
Summer showed up in its Sunday best. Air temp sat at 19°C under a few high clouds, the easterly wind barely stirring at 8 km/h before it eased off entirely. Sunrise broke at 6:03 AM and we ran out into clean, bright light with a full 10 km of visibility - not a hint of the fog the marine forecast promised for later. Seas held at a metre or less, closer to flat, on the water we love best.
The tides worked with us. Low tide came at 10:17 AM at just 1.4 feet, building toward a big 12.8 foot high at 5:12 PM. The key was the Seymour Narrows slack before flood at 9:49 AM. We planned the morning around it, and the flood tide pushed bait through the passage right on schedule.
The Catch
We fished the main channel of Discovery Passage, between Vancouver Island and Quadra Island, aboard the nimble 17' Boston Whaler Montauk. Downriggers went down to 200 feet with hoochies trailing behind flashers, trolling in the 2.5 to 3 knot range. The Purple truck hoochie was the fish-getter all morning - four Chinook released and one kept.
The fish of the day was a chrome bright Chinook right around 15 pounds, fresh from the salt with clean fins. It ran deep before it came up silver. Erick, up from Florida on his very first saltwater trip, had already had his morning made when he saw his first whales at dawn. The salmon was the exclamation point. The waning crescent moon and a Good solunar rating lined the major feeding window up with that slack tide, and the fish knew it. Water temp read a warm 17.9°C.
What's Running in August
August is prime Chinook time in Campbell River. Most fish this season run 12 to 16 pounds, healthy feeders with the occasional shot at a trophy 30-plus pounder. Under DFO Area 13 regulations for July 15 through August 31, we're on a one-per-day slot limit of 62 to 80cm - anything over 80cm gets released to protect the big spawners. It's fishing you can feel good about. Coho are starting to show as well as we move deeper into summer.
