Conditions Report: Friday, July 10, 2026

Some of the best fishing days don't come with blue sky. Friday was grey and wet from the start, a soft summer drizzle draped over Discovery Passage, and it didn't matter one bit to the fish.

Air temperature held at 17°C with a light east wind at just 3 knots — barely enough to ruffle the surface. Overcast clouds, steady drizzle, and a comfortable 10 km of visibility. Long summer daylight ran from a 5:23 AM sunrise to a 9:29 PM sunset, giving us plenty of room to work the afternoon and evening bite. Out on the water the seas stayed easy, a metre or less, with the northwest wind not filling in until later. We fished the flood tide building toward the 3:24 PM slack before ebb at Seymour Narrows, with a low at 8:41 AM climbing to a 3:51 PM high of 11.5 feet. That push moved bait, and the salmon stacked on it.

The Catch

We ran the 27' Boston Whaler Conquest out to the green can in Discovery Passage and set up on Tomic plugs at 140ft on the downriggers, trolling a steady walk. Warm 17.1°C water had the fish active and willing, and once the tide turned on, the rods didn't rest. Thirty-five fish came to the boat and went back — Chinook and Coho both in the mix, most Chinook in the honest 12-16 lb range, with the best of the day taping out at 18 lbs, chrome bright and fresh from the salt. The waning crescent moon and a Good solunar rating lined up with our afternoon push, the minor feeding window landing right in our window. Alberta had bought the trip as a gift for Ira, and watching a first-timer hold that bright fish in the rain, grinning ear to ear, is the whole reason we do this. "I've never caught so many fish in my life," Alberta said. Hard to argue.

What's Running in July

July is prime salmon season around Campbell River. Chinook are the backbone of the fishery, running mostly 12-16 lbs this time of year, with a real chance at a trophy 30-pounder for the patient angler. Coho join the party through summer and add fast, aggressive action. A reminder on DFO Area 13 regulations: from July 15 through August 31, Chinook run a 62-80cm slot limit with anything over 80cm released. We fish conservation-first year-round, and on days like this, releasing chrome fish to keep the runs strong feels exactly right.
