FSC Daily Fishing Report - Friday, August 7, 2026
A Campbell River fishing charter delivered the largest Chinook salmon of the season on August 7 — a 34-pound trophy landed by a first-time angler at Green Can in Discovery Passage, released clean under conservation rules.
Conditions Report: Friday, August 7, 2026
Dawn came clear and quiet over Discovery Passage. Sunrise at 5:59 AM, air temperature already sitting at 23°C, and a light northeast wind of just 5 km/h barely touching the surface. Visibility stretched a clean 10 kilometres, the mainland mountains standing sharp across the water. The marine forecast promised northwest 10 to 20 knots later in the day, but the morning belonged to us — seas one metre or less, flat calm through most of the troll.
The tides set the table. Low water came at 7:03 AM at 3.4 feet, with slack before flood at Seymour Narrows at 6:44 AM. Seymour would rip to 8.1 knots on the flood later on, but we worked the push down at Green Can where the current stacks the bait. The timing lined up with the major solunar feeding window — moon overhead from 6:18 to 8:18 AM under a Last Quarter moon, rated Good.
The Catch
We ran Tomic plugs with a 500 UV, downriggers set at 150 feet, trolling steady through the tide line. Water was a warm 18°C, so the fish were active and holding higher than they do in winter. Most of what we found were solid summer feeders in the 12 to 16 pound range.
Then Quinn's rod folded over. First time he'd ever held one. The drag screamed and the fish took line, and when it finally came up it was chrome bright and enormous — the largest salmon of our whole season. It measured 103 centimetres and pushed about 34 pounds. A genuine trophy. Cory, Quinn, and Megan had come from Edmonton for their first day on the water, and they got the fish of a lifetime.
What's Running in August
August is prime Chinook season in Campbell River. Most fish run in the typical 12 to 16 pound range, with a real chance at a trophy 30-pounder like Quinn's. Under DFO Area 13 rules for July 15 to August 31, the daily limit is one Chinook between 62 and 80 centimetres — anything over 80cm must be released. Quinn's fish was well over the slot, so back she went, clean and strong, to keep the run healthy. Come September, the Tyee season opens the door to keeping bigger fish, and the fishing only gets better.
