Fish the Flood Change: Best Bite Windows for 30 lb Tyee

Time the slack-to-flood change for peak Chinook action, with trophy Tyee odds at their best and Coho peaking on glass-calm water.

Fishing Storie Charters — Trophy Chinook (retention open) & Coho fishing in Campbell River, BC

Today's Tide Window Sets the Pace

Good morning from Campbell River. The clock is your best friend today, and right now it's pointing to a morning slack sliding into flood. That transition is prime time — the water begins to move, baitfish get pushed around, and the Chinook switch on. If you want the best crack at a fish, be on the water for that slack-to-flood change and work it hard while it lasts.

Conditions couldn't be much friendlier. We're sitting at 14°C under partly cloudy skies, with light NW winds at just 7 km/h and wave heights around 0.1m. That's glass-calm water, easy running, and comfortable fishing for anglers of every experience level. When the surface is this flat, you can hold your gear precisely in the zone and let the tide do the work.

Trophy Chinook and Peaking Coho

The Chinook are still biting hard through Discovery Passage. Most fish are landing in that solid 12-16 lb range, but this is the season's best window for a genuine trophy Tyee — we're talking 30 to 35 lbs. Retention is open, so guests are taking Chinook home for the freezer. Remember the rules: one per day, minimum 62cm, maximum 80cm.

Coho are peaking right now too, running 12-16 lbs, and they add real firepower to the day. Pink Salmon round out the mix, making August possibly the most varied month of the entire season. When you can chase trophy Chinook, aggressive Coho, and scrappy Pinks in a single trip, that's a hard combination to beat.

Technique and What to Expect

Match the bite to the tide. Anchovies in a glow teaser head work well through the water column, and glow spoons or hootchies down deep will draw the bigger Chinook holding tight to structure. Focus your effort on the flood push along the passage and around the Quadra shorelines, where bait stacks up and the fish follow. Coho will often come higher in the column, so don't be afraid to stagger your depths.

Expect an active week ahead with calm forecasts, cooperative fish, and that trophy potential hanging over every rod. If you've been thinking about a shot at a Tyee, this is the time to get out on Johnstone Strait and Discovery Passage.
