Step Aboard This Week for Trophy Chinook on a Calm Flood
Calm 14°C overcast skies and a morning flood set up a stellar week of trophy Chinook, peaking Coho, and Pinks in Discovery Passage.
What You'll See When You Step Aboard
Picture this: it's early, the water off Campbell River is glass-flat at essentially 0.0m, and a soft overcast sky holds the temperature at a comfortable 14°C. A light north wind at just 10 km/h barely ruffles the surface. You climb aboard, coffee in hand, and within minutes we're idling out toward Discovery Passage as the morning slack rolls into the flood. This is the kind of morning that makes guests fall in love with fishing the BC coast.
Chinook Are Still Biting Hard
The Chinook fishing right now is genuinely excellent. Most fish coming over the rail are healthy 12-16 pounders, but August brings the season's best shot at a true trophy — a 30 to 35 lb Tyee that'll have your arms burning. Retention is open, so guests are keeping their catch and heading home with fresh salmon in the cooler. The limit is one Chinook per day, between 62cm and 80cm, and we handle all the measuring and rules so you can just enjoy the fight.
Coho Peaking and Pinks in the Mix
If variety is your thing, this may be the best month of the entire year. Coho are peaking right now, with plenty of scrappy 12-16 lb fish tearing up the gear, and Pink Salmon are around in good numbers to keep the action steady between the bigger bites. It's rare to have this many species firing at once, and it makes for a full, exciting day on the water for anglers of every experience level.
How We're Fishing It
On a morning flood like today's, timing is everything. We'll work the tide change hard, running anchovies and glow spoons at depth along the productive edges of Discovery Passage. As the flood builds, the bite tends to switch on, and the calm N winds mean we can stay comfortable and put lines exactly where the fish are holding. If conditions allow, we may push toward the mouth of Johnstone Strait where the Coho have been thick.
Book Your Seat
This is prime time. Trophy Chinook, peaking Coho, and Pinks all in play under calm, comfortable skies — it doesn't get much better in Campbell River.
