Slack-to-Flood at Dawn: Timing Today's Trophy Chinook Bite
Fish the slack-to-flood change in Discovery Passage for trophy Chinook, peaking Coho, and Pinks under glassy 14°C skies.
Timing Is Everything Today
Good morning from Campbell River. Today's game plan is all about the clock. We're rolling out of morning slack and into the flood, and that transition is exactly where you want your gear in the water. The bite tends to fire as the tide starts to move and push bait through Discovery Passage, so the first couple of hours of flood are your prime window. Get out early, be set up before the change, and you'll be fishing the best part of the day.
Conditions on the Water
It's a comfortable 14°C out there this morning with partly cloudy skies overhead. NW winds are light at just 8 km/h and the water is sitting flat calm at essentially 0.0m of wave height — glassy, easy fishing conditions that make it simple to work your gear precisely through the tide change. When the water is this calm and the tide starts to move, the fish notice, and so do we.
What's Biting and Why
Chinook are still biting hard, and this is prime time. Most fish are running in that 12-16 lb range, but August gives us the season's best shot at a genuine trophy — a 30-35 lb Tyee. Retention is open, so these fish are going home with guests. Just remember the rules: one Chinook per day, minimum 62cm, maximum 80cm. On top of that, Coho are peaking right now, typically in that 12-16 lb class, and Pink Salmon are rounding out the mix. Honestly, this may be the best month of the year for sheer variety.
Technique Tips
Focus your effort on the slack-to-flood change through Discovery Passage and out toward the mouth of Johnstone Strait. As the flood builds, bait stacks up and the big Chinook move in to feed. Work your gear where the tide is pushing the bait balls and stay on the fish through that early flood window. Trophy odds are as good as they get all year.
