Winter Fishing FAQs
Is the fishing good in winter?
Yes! Resident Chinook salmon overwinter in Campbell River's nutrient-rich waters. While it's different from summer's peak runs, winter fishing offers consistent action with fewer crowds and stunning scenery.
How cold does it get on winter charters?
Water temperatures and air can be cold (2-10°C / 35-50°F), but our heated cabin keeps you comfortable. Dress in warm layers, bring gloves and a toque, and you'll be fine. We take warming breaks as needed.
Are there other species available in winter?
Winter is primarily Chinook season, but we also target Lingcod and Rockfish. Coho are not typically available in winter months. The good news is winter Chinook are often chrome-bright and fight hard.
What months are best for winter fishing?
November through March is our winter season. December and January can be slower but offer the most solitude. February and March often pick up as fish prepare for spring. Each month has its advantages.
Is winter fishing safe?
Safety is our priority in all seasons. We monitor weather closely and only go out when conditions are safe. Our boat is equipped for winter conditions with a heated cabin, modern safety equipment, and reliable navigation.
Why fish in winter instead of summer?
Winter offers fewer crowds, lower rates for some services, stunning mountain scenery with snow, and the chance to fish when most people think the season is over. For dedicated anglers, it's a unique experience.
