Packing Guide

What to Bring Fishing

Your complete packing list for a comfortable, successful day on the water. We provide all fishing gear — you bring the essentials.

What to Expect on the Water

Understanding conditions helps you prepare for a comfortable day fishing. See our complete preparation guide for more details.

Temperature

It's typically 5-10°F (3-5°C) cooler on the water than on shore due to wind and spray.

  • Summer (Jun-Aug): 12-21°C (54-70°F)
  • Spring/Fall: 8-15°C (46-59°F)
  • Early morning: Always cooler, bring extra layer

Weather Conditions

Campbell River gets rain year-round. Weather can change quickly on the water.

  • Always bring rain gear - even on sunny days
  • Light rain: Fishing is often better!
  • We cancel for safety only in severe weather
  • Wind creates chop - our 27' handles it well

Water Conditions

Discovery Passage has protected waters - calmer than open ocean fishing.

  • Tidal currents: Strong in Seymour Narrows
  • Boat motion: Gentle rocking while fishing
  • Spray: Expect some while traveling
  • Never far from shore if weather changes

Motion Sickness Prevention Tips

Follow these tips to maximize your comfort on the water:

Take Medication BEFORE Boarding

Gravol, Dramamine, or Bonine work best when taken 30-60 minutes before departure. Once you're feeling sick, it's too late.

Get Good Sleep & Avoid Alcohol

Being well-rested makes a huge difference. Skip drinking the night before your charter.

Eat a Light Breakfast

Empty stomach = worse seasickness. Eat something bland — toast, crackers, banana. Avoid greasy food.

Watch the Horizon

If you feel queasy, look at the horizon or distant shore. Avoid staring at your phone or reading.

BC Fishing License Required

Everyone fishing must have a valid BC Tidal Waters Sport Fishing License with Salmon Conservation Stamp.
