Why Seymour Narrows is World-Famous for Fishing

Seymour Narrows is one of the most powerful tidal passages on Earth, with currents reaching up to 16 knots. This creates a natural funnel that concentrates baitfish - herring, needlefish, and anchovies - attracting massive schools of Chinook and Coho salmon through Discovery Passage.

Located just north of Campbell River between Vancouver Island and Maud Island, Seymour Narrows has been a legendary fishing destination for generations. The nutrient-rich waters upwelling from the depths create an ideal feeding environment for salmon, making this one of British Columbia's most productive fishing locations. Book a full-day charter to access these incredible waters with an experienced guide.

Best Fishing Times & Tidal Strategy

Timing is everything at Seymour Narrows. The key is fishing during slack tide and the first hour of the new tide:

Slack Tide: Prime window - fish actively feeding
Ebb Tide Start: Baitfish pushed out, salmon follow
Flood Tide Start: Fresh nutrients, active bites
Dawn & Dusk: Low light feeding activity

Safety Considerations

Seymour Narrows demands respect. The extreme tidal currents require experienced navigation:

  • Currents to 16 knots: Only experienced captains should navigate during peak flow
  • Whirlpools & eddies: Form unpredictably during tide changes
  • Commercial traffic: Major shipping lane - stay aware
  • Guided charters recommended: Local knowledge is essential for safe, productive fishing

The History: Ripple Rock

In 1958, the underwater Ripple Rock was destroyed in the largest non-nuclear explosion ever detonated, removing a hazard that had claimed over 100 vessels. Today, the site marks some of the best fishing in the narrows, where the remaining underwater structure creates ideal habitat for salmon congregating in the current seams.
