Spring Chinook Filling Out—Catch & Release Action Heats Up
Spring Chinook are filling out beautifully in Campbell River—overcast skies and light winds make for ideal catch & release action this week.
Spring Chinook Season Arrives in Campbell River
The spring bite is firing up across Discovery Passage and beyond. Our Spring Chinook are filling out beautifully this week—we're seeing solid 15–25 lb fish moving through the channel with real aggression. Water temperatures and tidal movements are aligning perfectly, and conditions couldn't be more inviting for a day on the water.
What to Expect This Week
Today we're looking at overcast skies, light NW winds at 7 km/h, and minimal wave height—basically a glass-off day. Morning slack is transitioning into flood, which means we'll be hunting moving water where Chinook congregate. These conditions are ideal: low light keeps fish active longer, light winds mean stable boat position, and the tidal flow will concentrate our target species along predictable lines in Discovery Passage and into Johnstone Strait.
Technique & Species Mix
Spring Chinook respond beautifully to jigging and mooching right now. Focus on structure, current breaks, and the edges where baitfish stack up. We're also seeing excellent Lingcod action since the opener—double-header days are absolutely possible when you hook into both species on the same drift. Lingcod adds variety and keeps the rod bent throughout the day.
What's Running & Why
Spring Chinook are returning to Campbell River in strong numbers. The seasonal timing, combined with recent weather patterns and current flows through Discovery Passage, has triggered an active feed period. These fish are hungry and responsive. Remember: all Spring Chinook are catch & release only until July 15 per DFO regulation—but that doesn't diminish the thrill. There's nothing quite like the explosive take and acrobatic run of a solid 20 lb Chinook on the end of your line.
