Spot Prawn FAQs

When is spot prawn season in Campbell River?

Spot prawn season runs from November 1st through December 31st. This winter fishery offers a unique opportunity to harvest BC's most prized shellfish during the colder months when prawns are plentiful and at their sweetest.

How big are spot prawns?

BC Spot Prawns are the largest shrimp species on the West Coast, growing up to 9 inches long. They're significantly larger than regular shrimp and are prized for their sweet, succulent meat that rivals lobster in quality.

How many prawns can I keep?

Daily limits are set by DFO and typically allow for a generous personal catch. We'll advise you on current regulations before your trip. Most guests leave with plenty of prawns for several delicious meals.

How do you catch spot prawns?

We use specialized prawn traps baited with fish heads or pellets, set at depths of 200-400 feet. Traps are soaked for several hours and then pulled to harvest the prawns. It's an exciting moment when the traps come up loaded with prawns!

Are spot prawns good to eat?

Spot prawns are considered a delicacy and are among the finest seafood available anywhere. Their sweet, firm meat is best enjoyed fresh - either raw as sashimi, grilled, or lightly sauteed. Many consider them superior to lobster.
